AI in Security: Separating the Promise from the Hype


Artificial intelligence has quickly become one of the most talked-about technologies in the life safety and security industry. Manufacturers are introducing AI-enabled cameras, video analytics, access control platforms, monitoring tools and investigative software, while customers are increasingly asking installers what AI can do for them. For Louisiana alarm and security professionals, the challenge is no longer simply understanding the technology. Installers must also be able to separate practical, proven applications from marketing claims and unrealistic customer expectations.


AI itself is not entirely new to the security industry. Technologies such as automatic license plate recognition, object classification and video analytics have relied on forms of artificial intelligence and machine learning for years. What is changing is the sophistication of these systems and the introduction of large language models and natural-language interfaces. An operator may now be able to search hours of recorded video using a description such as a person wearing a particular type of clothing or carrying a backpack rather than manually reviewing camera after camera. AI can identify potential matches, organize information and dramatically reduce the amount of time required for an investigation.


That capability can provide significant value, but installers should be careful about presenting AI as something that can independently understand every situation. AI does not have the experience, judgment or contextual awareness of a trained security professional. Its results depend heavily on the information it receives. Camera placement, lighting, image quality, network performance, system configuration and the quality of the underlying data can all affect performance. An AI-generated result should therefore be considered information that assists a person—not necessarily a final determination.


This distinction is particularly important in life safety and property protection. An impressive demonstration at a trade show does not automatically mean a technology is appropriate for every application. Before recommending an AI-enabled product, Louisiana installers should understand exactly what the system is designed to detect, its limitations, how results are verified and what happens when the technology gets something wrong. Manufacturers should be able to explain how their technology has been tested and what role human verification plays in the process.


Privacy and cybersecurity must also be part of the discussion. AI-enabled physical security systems can process substantial amounts of information about people, vehicles and activities. Installers should understand where that information is stored, who can access it, how long it is retained and how it is protected. Responsible AI deployment should include strong data governance, attention to bias and accuracy, appropriate access controls and human oversight of important decisions.


Cybersecurity becomes even more important as cameras and other intelligent devices become powerful network-connected computing platforms. Modern edge devices may process considerably more information than traditional security equipment, meaning physical security and cybersecurity can no longer be treated as completely separate responsibilities. Proper passwords, firmware management, network segmentation, secure remote access and ongoing maintenance should be considered alongside traditional installation practices.


Installers should also be cautious when customers believe AI will eliminate false alarms or replace human operators. AI can help reduce nuisance activity by analyzing information before it reaches an operator, but no technology is perfect. A poorly positioned camera, environmental conditions, incomplete data or an improperly configured analytic can still produce incorrect results. The objective should be to use AI to make trained people faster and more effective, not to remove people from critical decisions.

This creates an important opportunity for LLSSA members. Customers are being exposed to increasingly aggressive claims about AI, and many will need someone they trust to explain what those claims actually mean. The installer who understands both the capabilities and limitations of the technology can become more than the company that installs equipment. That installer becomes a trusted advisor who helps the customer determine whether a particular technology actually solves a problem.


When evaluating an AI-enabled solution, ask practical questions: What specific problem does this feature solve? What information does it collect? Where is the data processed and stored? How accurate is it under real-world conditions? What happens when the AI is uncertain or wrong? Can a human review the result? How is the software updated and secured? And perhaps most importantly, can the manufacturer demonstrate measurable value beyond simply putting the letters “AI” on the product?

Artificial intelligence will continue to change the security industry, and Louisiana installers should not ignore its potential. AI can make video searches faster, help operators manage large amounts of information, improve analytics and allow security professionals to focus their attention where it is needed most. But successful adoption will depend on responsible implementation, realistic expectations and knowledgeable professionals who understand the systems they are selling and installing.


For Louisiana's life safety and property protection industry, the goal should not be to install AI simply because it is the newest technology. The goal should be to determine where AI genuinely improves security, understand its limitations and make sure qualified people remain part of the decision-making process. In an industry built around protecting lives and property, knowing what the technology cannot do can be just as important as knowing what it can.
